IRRIGATION INCREASING ON U.S. FARMS

THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF
AGRICULTURE’S NEW FARM AND RANCH IRRIGATION SURVEY
SAYS MORE FARMERS ARE IRRIGATING THEIR LAND
COMPARED TO FIVE YEARS AGO. We found that fifty four
point three million acres of farm land were
irrigated and that’s actually a five percent
increase since we last measured in 2003. The irrigation methods,
there’s more sprinkler systems being used and less
of the gravity based systems. U-S-D-A’S NATIONAL
AGRICULTURE STATISTICS SERVICE FARM AND RANCH
IRRIGATION SURVEY SUPPLEMENTS THE CENSUS OF AGRICULTURE. IT HELPS GUIDE GOVERNMENT,
PRODUCTION AND BUSINESS ACTIVITY RELATED
TO IRRIGATION. It’s critically important
for policy makers, for people who manufacture
irrigation equipment, for producers themselves. Right now there’s a lot of
questions going on about use of water. There’s tension between
use of water for urban areas and for agriculture. So policies are being made and
they are going to be using it. Plus, equipment
manufacturers. Those people who are
making the technology that allows our producers
to irrigate. They want to know what’s
happening so that they can make their business plans. IN ADDITION TO FINDING
THAT IRRGATION HAS INCREASED, THE SURVEY
FOUND THAT SEVENTY FIVE THOUSAND FARMS CHANGED
PRACTICES TO REDUCE ENERGY AND WATER USE. And then for the first
time ever, we’re asking about recycled water. It’s all the information
about the use of water on a farm and ranch. NINETY EIGHT HUNDRED FARMS
ARE USING RECYCLED WATER AND THIRTY TWO HUNDRED ARE
USING RECLAIMED WATER. TO SEE THE REPORT GO TO
