TRATTORI STORICI FIAT #EP.4 – LA SERIE 90 FIATAGRI
Welcome back to a new episode of FIAT HISTORICAL TRACTORS. It is a real pleasure to be with you in this fourth episode because today we will talk about the birth of a piece of agricultural history. Today we talk about FIATAGRI. We are in 1983. In March 1983. And at the Verona agriculture show the farmers discover a new brand. In fact, FIAT TRATTORI, LAVERDA AND HESSTON were no longer present in the exhibitors’ catalog, but only one FIATAGRI name: FIAT for agriculture. For the occasion, the famous stylized leaf mark was created, which also resembled the tread of the tractor tire on the ground, even though the FIAT diamond-shaped inscription on the tractors remained, the LAVERDA inscription on the combine and the HESSTON inscription on haymaking machines. Now let’s jump to September 1984. A bad year for the agricultural machinery market, which had fallen by 30% worldwide in recent years. FIATAGRI reacted with an unprecedented undertaking: the launch of 26 new tractors divided into 5 series. The series was the 90, the 66, the 46, the 65 and the 55 and included wheeled and tracked vehicles from 55 to 180 hp. And as if that weren’t enough, in 1984 he also acquired the French BRAUD, world leader in the grape harvesting sector. Nine years after its launch, the 80 series gives way to the 90th: The first FIATAGRI. Initially the “middle low” was launched from 55 to 80 hp and the high from 115 to 180 hp. In 1985 then came the central range from 90 to 110 horses. The mid-low 90 range featured several innovations including the new 3 or 4 cylinder engines and the new power lift that was powerful and precise. The LIFT O MATIC, a fast push-button lifting and lowering device, makes its debut as a rear lift. the cabin suspended on six silent blocks was offered in the comfort or superconfort version with air conditioning, hatch and maximum noise level below 80 db. Now let’s talk about the high 90 series. Compared to the previous 80, only aesthetics remained. Engines, transmission and lift were completely new. 5 models available 115.130, 140.160 and 180/90. the first three were equipped with a 6,800 cm3 type 8065 cylinder while the two most powerful fitted a FIAT-OM 8365 A 6 CYLINDER TURBO from 8,100 cm3.
Let’s hear it for a moment An engine that everyone remembers. Aggressive and elegant and not at all thirsty for fuel. Official tests gave a consumption of 32 kg of diesel per hour at maximum power. A good result for an 8.1 liter engine with an efficiency of that level. At the time of its launch in 1984, two mechanical transmissions were offered, but given the high demand for hydraulic gearboxes in 1986, the belts upgraded the 90 high with the powershift hydraulic gearbox, the electronic lift and the power take-off with front lift. The first electronic FIAT lifter was developed in collaboration with magneti marelli and the faculty of physics of the University of Modena. Subsequently, the agritronic on-board computer was also made available which allowed for the measurement of ground speed, percentage of slip and hectares worked. An essential accessory for all contractors. What about the 180/90 … certainly one of the most beloved tractors of the whole FIAT history.
We close with the last series 90 launched in 1985: call center or bridge. Why call bridge? Because it filled the void between 80 and 115 horses. In the beginning it was 90-90 (a 5-cylinder) and 100-90 (a 6-cylinder). Then, in 1987, the 110-90 was added to create a particularly well-balanced machine. We are talking about 5800 cm3 of engine for 4180 kg of weight. an excellent weight / power ratio. The 110/90 was agile, compact and unbeatable at the perfect power take off for hills and plains. So much appreciated by farmers that it was marketed for the beauty of 18 years. The last copies of 2002 were called new holland and had the suffix “TRADITION” to remember the glorious past. The history of FIATAGRI continues when in 1989 the quota of 2 million tractors sold was reached and in 1990 the WINNER series was launched in paris from 98 to 130 horses.
